Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes A Sensation Of Swollen Tongue With Difficulty In Swallowing?
I tongue feels swollen affecting my speech and the taste of foods. I am having a difficult time swallowing solid foods, I have a tendency to gag. It feels like the swelling in my tongue could hinder my breathing. It feels like something is stuck in my throat, but a doctor that I saw can't see anything abnormal with a light.
Swollen tongue can occur due to causes like Allergic reaction leading to allergic angioedema while it can also be due to causes like Amyloid protein accumulation in tongue or hormonal imbalances.. In case if it comes and goes then it is most probably due to allergic reaction causing allergic angioedema of lips.. So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room or a physician and get evaluated when you have the symptoms active and get a clinical examination and investigations iike blood tests done to rule out the exact cause of the symptoms.. You can take antihistamines like Benadryl or Allegra for reduction in swelling as obstruction in breathing can be fatal.. Also emergency doctor can give a steroid shot to reduce swelling faster..
Hope this helps..
Regards...
