What Causes A Pus Filled Hole On The Finger After Amputation?

What causes a pus filled hole on the finger after amputation? Ok, long question. in july 2009 i had a wodworking accident with a jointer which scalloped the tops of my two middle fingers on left hand. lost partial bone and most of nail on each tip but pad on each finger remained intact. Hand surgeon modified the amputation by removing nail and matrix and cleaning up severed bone then folded the finger pad up and stitched about where cutical used to be. healed fine, have full use and 90% sensation, but there is a tiny hole on one of the fingers that never closed and puss/fluid can be squeezed out. Never painful, never inflamed or swolen, and never seems infected. Any idea what might have happened

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for your detailed history about a fluid filled hole after finger amputation that does not cause pain, inflammation or swelling.
The commonest causes of such an occurrence are as follows:
Some dead bony splinter can cause foreign body rection as this is not the healthy part.
Sinus formation that is line by skin,
This can be diagnosed and treated in the following ways:
X-ray of the finger can show if there is any bone splinter or so.
Exporation is the best way.
This allows removal of any foreign body and tract that is lined by epithelium.
This will allow the proper healing and your problem will be gone.
Consult a Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, investigations and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
