Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I developed a rather sudden painful bump on my thumb on Saturday afternoon. Thinking it could be shingles of the hand I went to an urgent care Sunday morning. The the NP did not know what it was but said it was inflamation... I have had a mild case of Shingle on my back 6 years ago, once you have that pain one never forgets! I ask for antiviral / given Acyclovir 800mg 2 daily. It has responded, called today for a refill to cover me for 14 days. Lesion is small and not erupted and continues to improve. After more research I believe it is Herpetic Whitlow, My concerns are being around my grandchildren, we have a new granddaughter due this week and I am to be the primary care giver. Also concerned about being around the newborn. Also should I take the medicine for a longer period? Thank you!

What Causes A Painful Bump On The Thumb?
Hello, Your symptoms seem to be related to shingles. I recommend using antiviral cream for local application. I also recommend using antiviral oral medication such as Acyclovir. You can use anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen for the pain. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
