What Causes A Lump Or Knot At The Back Of The Head?

My 12 yr old daughter was feeling on the back of her head and felt a lump or a knot. She said that when i rub on it to long it started getting a little sore. It is located at at the back where your head starts to curve few inches before the base of the skull. She has not fell or bumped it. What do you think it could be?

hi,
thanks for your question,
this could be an enlarged occipital lymph node. these are common in children and are most commonly second secondary to scalp inflammation or a viral infection.
it should improve over time but if it does not or continues to enlarge I would seek medical attention.
best wishes
