What Causes A Lump On The Shin Along With Bruising?

Good Evening. On Tuesday, while playing with my dog, I threw one of her toys. She ran into my right shin with her head. She hit me so hard, I was bent over trying to hold my leg. After I took Myka for her walk, I noticed a big lump on my shin. It still hurt a little. I called my Dr and he told me to ice it. The bruise is spreading and at certain times it starts hurting and sometimes throbs. The bruise appeared on Wednesday and no the bruising has spread. I also have a total knee replacements and wonder if I should call my orthopedic physician. Please help and thank you very much.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that bump and bruise on the shin due to hitting of the leg on the shin is due to traumatic injury to the soft tissues of the shin due to injury and it has led to trauma to small superficial blood vessels leading to accumulation of blood into the soft tissues causing bruising and formation of a Hematoma..
Hematoma is a harmless tumor like mass formed due to spillage of blood from ruptured blood vessels leading to accumulation of blood into the soft tissues forming a lump..
The lump seems to be due to infection and not hematoma formation..
At times the hematoma gets localized and encapsulated and forms a firm hard lump that can take a long time, say a few months to resolve, but it generally tend to resolve itself..
You should do alternate warm and cool compresses over the lump..
Apply Heparin gel as it help in faster disintegration of the hematoma..
If there is pain you can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and apply numbing gel containing Lignocaine over the lump..
You can also elevate your leg while lying down..
You need not to worry as you are able to walk well and it is indicating that you do not have any serious tissue tears or bony fractures and in case if the condition worsen then you can consult your orthopedician and get an x ray done..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
