What Causes A Lump On The Head After An Injury?

My 3 year old daughter just hit her head, and immediately a knot formed about 2 inches above her right temple. She s acting fine, just cried a few minutes, but I m just worried as it s so close to her temple. Should I take her to ER? If not, it s almost her hed time. Should I keep her awake for a while? Thank you.

Hi there,

The risk generally depends on how significant the bump was. Was it just a trip and fall, or bump while running, or did she fall from a great height? If it is just a regular run-and-bump then it is unlikely that there is internal injury, even near the temple.

There is no need to run to the emergency room now, and no need to keep her awake. Just follow your usual routine and observe her behaviour in the next 24-48 hours. You should seek help if:

1. She's complaining of intense headache that doesn't go away
2. She vomits more than once, for no other reason
3. She seems drowsier than usual, continuously irritable and crying, or she is behaving abnormally

The swelling is probably from a surface blood vessel that got injured in the bump, and the bruising will spread later as the bump flattens out.

Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
