What Causes A Leaking PEG Feeding Tube?

My son is a Cancer patient and he has a gastric tube now for about 3 weeks. The problem is it is now leaking fluids around the tube when administering his liquid meds and water. What could have happened and how can we fix this? This is the first time this has occurred.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Leakage of feed/gastric contents around the PEG site can occur due to poor positioning of the external fixation plate (it is not flush to the skin) after insertion. To secure the PEG, slide the external fixation plate down the tube towards the skin, resting no further than 0.5cm away from the skin , therefore forming a seal. Constipation can cause leakage around the site due to a build-up of pressure within the gastrointestinal tract that prevents the contents of the stomach from passing into the bowel.so maintain free bowel movements. Patients living at home should be asked to monitor their bowel movements and know what action to take if there are any problems. If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Leaking is common in PEG inserted patients the possible causes are

1.poor positioning and fixation of the plate.
2.Too small tube for stoma.
3.Poor feeding technic.
4.Constipation can cause leakage around the site due to a build-up of pressure within the gastrointestinal tract that prevents the contents of the stomach from passing into the bowel.

So Keep better tube for fixation, use monitor for bowel movements if not use laxatives.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
