What Causes A Growth On The Shin Which Is Large In A 90 Year Old?
My 90 year old mother, who is very healthy but has been in the sun all of her life, has a growth of skin on her shin which is very large now. I came to stay with her for awhile and noticed it then (3 weeks ago) and thought she had run into something, however it has not changed appearance expcept perhaps worse. It is the size of a silver dollar and has a volcanic look with a black center irregular angry red edges and grey dead skin rising about 1/4 high. She is living in a remote area but we are planning on seeing a doctor when we go into town in a few weeks. Is this something we should go into town sooner for? Can you tell me anything based on my not too good description? Thank you

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sulochana's Response
Hello, Thank you for writing to HCM.
As per you description it should be a healing wound (scab) or a growth. Aged people are more prone to skin problem because of co-morbid states such as diabetes, blood pressure, decrease in immunity, there is no specific growth which occurs only in shin region. We need a clinical picture for confirmatory diagnosis, I would advice you to meet a dermatologist in person for further management.
Regards
