What Causes A Circular Rash On The Pinna Of The Ear?

I had a raised circular scaley, tender to lie on, skin lesion appear on the pinna of my right ear. I went to a dermatologist who told me it was caused by bending the pinna while sleeping on it and it was nothing to worry about. However, he recognized that I was not satisfied with that diagnosis (which I cannot remember) and then he proceeded to cut out a piece of the ear and send it for analysis. Why would he send off something that was nothing to worry about? Any ideas what his diagnosis ORIGINALLY was?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
He may have sent off a biopsy to prove to you that it was nothing serious if he perceived that you were not happy with his explanation after the exam. Many things can cause circular rashes on the ears, yeast, psoriasis, other types of infection or autoimmune disorders. The good news is the biopsy should give you the exact diagnosis.
