What Causes Hashimoto's Thyroiditis?

I got Hashimoto's as a little girl. My father got it after me..
Is Hashimoto's contagious?
I also have hypothyroidism, I take 0.137 mg.
last blood test was in October TSH value was 0.88 ... can my hypothyroidism be related to the Hashimoto's?
I have Vitamin D deficiency, and Iron deficiency too.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Welcome to HCM!

I appreciate your concern for the causes for Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

It is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues, the immune system attacks the thyroid.
This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs.

Your hypothyroidism is due to Hashimoto's disease.

It has a genetic predisposition: It runs in the families

People who get Hashimoto's often have family members who have thyroid disease or other autoimmune diseases.
You have to take the treatment Levothyroxine for life long.
