What Causes GERD, Sore Throat And Cold?

I know I have GERD and I am also sick with sore throat and cold. What can I take that will not relax the the flap in my stomach that is causing the gerd? I have been drinking ginger in steeping water with honey, taking cough medicine-robitussin DM, advair- because my chest is so tight. I take on a regular basis nadolol, prestiq, lactose intolerant pill, and protonix (which was just changed to dexilant) for a few weeks to get the GERD under control, advil, naproxen, clonidine for hot flashes, calcium pills, daily vitamin and fish oil omega 3 pill,- yesterday I took sudaphed. I have terrible migraines, but not right now- but that is the reason I take most of these medicines-not because of heart problems or seisures or anything. Also, which of these medicines may actually be causing me the gerd? Not sure what to take for the cold.

Hi! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

You must avoid any kind of anti inflammatory drugs like naproxen which increases the acid secretion of the stomach, and might cause ulceration and perforations in the stomach/duodenum. Regarding GERD the following might help you :

1) Elevate the head end of the bed with two blocks on each side, so that the regurgitation does not occur while lying down, and the contents of esophagus and stomach flow down with gravity.
2) Some modification in your diet like more of roughage, enough liquids, avoidance of oily, fried, and fast food
3) Regular routine exercises like morning walk depending on your medical fitness.
4) Prescription for a prokinetic agent and a proton pump inhibitor for symptomatic relief and to have a control on the acid production and facilitate movement of gastric contents downwards.
5) You could go for a simple anti histamine like cetrizine for your cold which might be safer in GERD.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
