What Causes AST: 41, ALT: 80 And Ferritin: 155 In Blood Test?

Hello I am a nineteen-year-old male and I weigh 232 pounds. I recently did a blood test and my AST, ALT, and ferritin levels are very high. (AST: 41, ALT: 80, Ferritin: 155). I tested negative for hepatitis A and B and for any autoimmune diseases. What could be a possible reason for these numbers?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The level of liver enzyme AST is only marginally raised. The normal level should be below 35 U/L.
The level of ALT is 80 which is above the normal range. ALT is normally below 35 U/L.
Ferritin level is within normal range. The normal range of ferritin is between 24 and 336 ng/mL.
The AST and ALT are slightly raised and this could be due to mild infection by hepatotrophic viruses.
There are other hepatotrophic viruses besides hepatitis A,B,C,D and E which cause hepatic injury.
If there are no other associated symptoms, then you can relax and get follow up levels of AST and ALT after few weeks.
Autoimmune disease is unlikely because in such a case the level of AST and ALT is quite high.

Thanks and take care

Hi,
Thank you for choose Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.
I see the value of your lab test, you didn’t mentioned the unit here this is important to know, the normal range vary from laboratory to laboratory but the ferritin level 150 that you mentioned her if has the unit ng /ml it is at normal range because the normal range for male is 12-300 ng/ml.
For the liver enzyme, AST is a bite high from the normal range (5-40 units per liter) and ALT is higher than the normal range (7-56 units per liter).
The cause of the elevated liver enzyme can be a fatty liver due to the overweight as I see from your weigh you probably are overweight but to determine it you should add as information here your height too, alcohol drinking or maybe high level of exercise at last 7 days.
Hope I give answer to your problem. Feel free to ask me again
Take care,
Dr .Marsida JANKO
