What Caused High Fever With Swollen Throat Sores?

A little more than 48 hours ago I had a rapid onset of high fever and chills. This lasted about 24 hours and I slept most of this time. After the first 24 hours the fever was normal to low grade but still no energy or appetite and I noticed swollen puss-like areas in my throat. I went to a walk-in clinic and they said they feared these were abscesses not strep throat and referred me to the ER. At the Er, they tested for strep, flu, and my blood for bacteria. All these test came back negative and simply diagnosed me as having a sore throat (however my white-blood cell count was at 2.5). It s now the next day and I still have no energy, no appetite, and the sores in my throat, but as yet, no fever today. What could possible be going on?
