What Cause Vaginal Bleeding After Intercourse?

Hello, I am 55 years old and I am experiencing the joys of menopause. I am saying this with the slightest sarcasm as this has been awful. I am newly married after being a widow for 20 years during which time I was not sexually active and now having sexual relations with my Husband is nothing but terrible, awful pain and there is always blood after and then it takes a couple days to recover, sometimes I will even present with a little blood in the toilet after urinating. I am sure that this is a combination of being sexually inactive for over 20 years and being in Menopause. I had a hysterectomy due to endometriosis and recently had an ultrasound which showed a mass, cyst on my right ovary which has grown since my last ultrasound 1 year ago. My question, is the bleeding I have had after sex normal, and should I be scared that I may have developed ovarian cancer over this last year? Thank you, I am very anxious to hear your professional medical opinion.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

When bleeding occurs between normal periods, there are many possible causes and the most common is a hormone imbalance. While some causes may be easy to treat, others can indicate a serious underlying condition.

Whether you notice spotting or heavier bleeding in between periods, it’s important to see your doctor for testing, diagnosis, and treatment options.

The potential other causes of bleeding between periods include a growth in the uterus or cervix, stress change in medication, miscarriage, vaginal dryness. Your doctor will also likely give you a physical exam, including a pelvic exam.

Diagnostic tests can help your doctor find the cause of the bleeding. Your doctor may draw blood to check hormone levels. Then right treatment can be recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
