Asking what could be possibly wrong with a 12 week year old male with a five-day history of muscle weakness and a one-day history of dehydration. The baby also had a decrease in the vigor of feeding during breast-feeding three days ago. Other symptoms include the baby having a difficult time sitting up and moving less than usual. He is limp, unresponsive to stimuli, trouble with gurgling in the back of his throat, very poor head control, and increased flaccidness. He had severe muscle-weakness and dehydration. Cerebrospinal fluid measurements were within a normal range. When the baby s throat was swabbed, no microbes could be grown under aerobic conditions. His diet consists primarily of breast milk, and occasionally honey. The baby s medical history revealed that he had received no immunizations. The father had recently returned from Western Uganda where he had been performing anthropological research on local populations in the area. Both parents had also visited various parts of Africa over the previous decade. This is a hypothetical situation but would like to know what is wrong with the baby.
