What Can Cause Upper Abdominal Pain After Acute Colon Surgery?

Hello, History first before question_ I suffered an acute colon rupture 2 years ago, I had a colostomy for 3 months and than another surgery to close that up. I spent nearly 4 weeks in the hospital the first time due to the fact my bowels had not started moving... Took that long to finally catch up... My surgeon was excellent- better than 100%... He told me about all the scar tissue he found inside of my abdomen on the first surgery- then on the second surgery- only 3 months later, again there was huge amounts of adhesions to be dealt with first before he could do the actual procedure. I have had a vaginal hysterectomy, back surgery and gall bladder removal prior to the colon rupture. I have suffered from IBS for years and have had more than my share of abdominal pain and bowel problems. I was diag. maybe 6 years ago with diverticulosis on about my 2 colonoscopy. Never Dreaming I would suffer a rupture....So now here we are 2 years later- In some ways my bowels are better than they ever were but I often have the symptoms of urgency, diarrhea, then some constipation (not often).. What is really hurting me is the upper abdominal pain I get every few weeks that puts me down. I think it is stool moving through the transverse colon and adhesions are binding things up. I usually apply some heat there and rest- Is that a good thing to do? I can count on a huge blow out within 24 hours or less... It is really the only area that hurts like that- so maybe I am lucky. Overall with the urgency and diarrhea- (many Bm s in a row) I am afraid to go anywhere... Sure I wear protection but is it enough? It was recommended for me to take two Immodium a day and Metamucil caps also. I do take that along with an antispasmodic... Is there anything else I can do? Is this something I will have to live with? One other question is this, I haven t had popcorn since my surgery- do I miss it? You Bet... I recently was told that you can get hullless organic white popcorn that is good for fiber and is safer for folks like me- is this true? Thanks for listening.... Carol

Hello,
I can understand your concern towards your symptoms
1) Yes your symptoms are partly due to adhesion band formation inside abdomen. This is natural and occur 100% after any abdominal surgery. There is no any preventive measure for it.
2) Symptom of constipation is partly secondary to medications that you are using to control diarrhea. You need dosage modification of Immodium for this. Even anti-spasmodic medication can cause constipation in some patients.
3) Popcorn is considered as partially cooked food. You must avoid such partially cooked food and any raw fruits/vegetables with seeds. This are risk factors for development of intestinal obstruction on background of adhesion.

Hope I answered your query. If have any further query, I would be happy to help you.
Have a good day!
