What Can Cause Agitation And OCD After A Heart Surgery?

Hello, My 82 year old single Uncle just had heart surgery but even before states he wants to die, he is agitated and is hateful to everyone then can be nice, a little. He knows what is going on and has had a psyche evaluation that said he was no threat to himself. He is in bed will not feed himself or cannot get up but is obsessive about brushing his teeth?

Hi,

Post-surgery depression can be seen in many people as the body goes through a lot of physical and mental stress.
It would be advisable to keep a friendly house nurse for a couple of days as well as consider consulting a geriatric specialist for a home visit. Also as a family member, you need to be very patient with him and friendly as well even if it is not reciprocated .
You can consult a physician if it would be advisable to give a low dose antidepressant-like Citalopram for few days as it does wonders for post-surgical patients.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Riyanka Chail, General & Family Physician
