What Can Be The Life Expectancy Of Multiple Myeloma Patient?

Hi my husband was diagnosed with mutiple myeloma just before Christmas he had a bad reaction to thalidamide and ended up in hospital with chest problems and blood clots. He still has breathing problems so has not been on ant medication until the chest is clear. He now has continual back pain. What should I expect to happen in the future with this disease? and how long is the life expectancy?

Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Multiple myeloma has a very poor prognosis. Without any treatment life expectancy is not more than 2 years in general. It depends on the individual health, stage and many other factors. But overall it has very poor prognosis.
Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer.

Hematologist Dr. Hardik Sanghvi's  Response
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Prognosis of multiple myeloma is very poor despite of treatment. Pancytopenia, various infection, bleeding, bone involvement and fracture, kidney involvement and chronic renal failure are the complications. Life expectancy is not good. Bone marrow transplantation is helpful in some cases where thalidomide not work.
Overall life expectancy is not good.

Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Your husband has multiple myeloma and he has bad reaction to thalidomide. So treatment of choice is bone marrow transplantation. Other treatment options are bortezomib or other chemotherapy.

Despite of all treatment prognosis is very poor.
Life expectancy without treatment is less then 1 year in most of the cases, however it depends on many factors. Like general health and spread of disease. But overall life expectancy is not good. Sorry to say but it is truth.
