General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I appreciate your concern for your friend and can understand your friend's problem.
I would like to enlighten you that in most women after menopause, calcium and vitamin D deficiency is very common. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia in adults, which means softening of bones, which leads to fractures after trivial trauma.
I would suggest to take vitamin D supplements along with calcium supplements daily. Also would advise few things like take milk and milk products, healthy diet, have a sun bath in early morning for at least 5 days a week, take care of high blood pressure by taking regular medicines and regular follow up, avoid extra salt intake in diet, check blood sugar, do meditations to remain stress free, etc.
Hope this answers your question and let me know directly if you have any further relevant queries, i will be obliged to guide you in right direction.

Dietitian & Nutritionist Kathy Shattler's  Response
Hello! Thank you for visiting us at HCM. Vitamin D is one of those nutrients that we learn more about everyday. Immediate and observable D deficiency signs is loss of balance, increased falls and fractures. We are seeing more studies linking vitamin D to cancer, heart disease and overall mental health. One study a few days back suggested we have set our limits far too low for what the human body really needs.

I hope I answered your query and good luck to you. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
