I think what you experienced is an episode of night terror which is an extremely normal condition and happens to many people. It may be due to stress and the only thing you need to do is to relax before you go to sleep. you can try a few meditation exercises before you go to sleep which will help to calm your mind. If you are unable to sleep even after that you should consult your physician and ask him to prescribe you a sleeping pill for a few days.
