What Are The Symptoms Of Down Syndrome?

My granddaughter is 11 months old, has Down Syndrome. If there are degrees of DS then she has a mild degree. Recently, we have noticed that she seems to be having petit mal seizures and our family physician has asked that we keep a record of how often and how long she seems to be staring. Does this have anything to do with her Syndrome? Is she more likely to have a grand mal seizure? Our doctor says she may out-grow the seizures.
Thank you so much for any input you may have.

Hi..Downs syndrome as such has multiple organ involvement. It can cause typical facial features and congenital heart disease. It can predispose to dementia or decreased cognition or hearing defects and refractory errors. I think instead of looking only at the seizure part of the spectrum, it should be looked upon as a whole and we should try to improve the functioning of the child in all the areas. In case of petit mal epilepsy EEG should be done to rule out other seizures which you are worried about and neuro imaging will give us the idea of any structure abnormality in the brain acting as a focus of seizures. Kindly let me know if you need any more help in this matter.
