What Are The Symptoms And Treatment For Gustatory Rhinitis?

I have had what I thought was allergic rhinitis on and off for years sometimes going for months/years with minimal symptons and then getting really bad and quite debilitating as they have been for the past few months. I have been keeping a food diary and sometimes certain food affects me and other times it doesnt. the only thing that always affects me is alcohol and high dairy. It keeps me awake at night and I m oftne streaming and lose my taste when I eat or sometimes I know my taste has gone before I start eating. I have been prescribed Telfast by the GP but not sure if they are doing anything plus the nasal spray aggravates it even more so I m not using that. I m wondering if it could be gustatory rhinitis that I ve just heard about. Can you suggest where I go with this as it is affecting my general well being, work, sleep, eat etc. thank you

Hi,

Noted the history about having symptoms suggestive of allergic rhinitis although you have not mentioned specific symptoms, change of taste, alcohol and dairy products increase the problems, suffering fr a long time, GP started you on Telfast, nasal spray aggravates, you have heard about gustatory rhinitis.

Gustatory rhinitis means running nose only during or after eating hence your symptoms are not suggestive of the same. The causes are already known to you. These are aggravated by alcohol and dairy products indicating this to be allergic problem.Anything under the sun including the sun can cause allergy hence you have to go further to notice and make a list of all factors that increase your symptoms. The things can be foods, beverages, factors, stress, anxiety, any changes in atmosphere, soaps, scents and so on.

Hence, a keen observation and note down the factors. Once the cause is known get a control over it by avoiding these instigating or enhancing factors and your most of the problem will be over. Continue the medicines prescribed by your Doctor which suits you too. Get a referral for an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination, investigations and further appropriate management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
