What Are The Symptoms And Remedies For Vitiligo ?

My 9 and half year old son had white patches on the inner surface of his lips (both top & bottom). We consulted dermatologist for a doubt on Vitiligo in Bangalore last week. He examined under blue light hood and confirmed it as vitiligo and prescribed Antoxid-HC tablets and Tacrolimus Ointment. Both the parents and had no cases of Viltiligo in their families and surprised of this diagnosis. Also we are bit worried of giving him this medicine. Please reply and help us understand the case better and cure ASAP.
1. Is Vitiligo, a contiguous disease? If we have no genetic history of Vitiligo, how did it affected our boy?
2. Are there alternate ways of confirming "white patches" are really symptoms of Vitiligo? If yes where and how can we get those conducted?
3. Is Antoxid-HC is O K to use for small child of 9.5 years?
4. If this is a Vitiligo case, what is the chances of spreading to other parts of the body? and how can we prevent it completely 100%?
5. Are there any natural remedies for this disease?

Vitiligo is not a contagious disease otherwise every dermatologist in the world would have acquired it from patients.
In most cases of vitiligo, there is no family history.
There seems to be a hereditary component to vitiligo – but only 10% have a family history. Children of parents with vitiligo do have a somewhat increased chance of developing it.
Diagnosis of vitiligo is mostly clinical and can be confirmed by Woods light.
Antoxid HC contains B-Carotene and other antioxidants and theory of destruction of Melanocytes by free radicals is the basis behind prescribing it. It is safe in children
Vitiligo is an unpredictable disease and no one can guarantee whether it will stay as it is or spread to other body area. However vitiligo if stable usually stays so this way.
Natural remedies utilize psoralens which can sometimes give unpredictable results. Therefore it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for proper treatment.
