General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Folic acid is commonly prescribed as a supplement during pregnancy to prevent and treat anemia. Generally it is well tolerated by most pregnant women however it may cause heart burn, flatulence or belching which subside gradually.

It is also recommended in higher doses (such as 5 milligrams) to prevent the risk of babies born with neural tube defects (brain defects) such as anencephaly and spina bifida. It is quite safe in high dose and hence continue to take it as prescribed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
