What Are The Side Effects Of A Liver Shunt?

My sister in law has cirrhosis of the liver and keeps getting fluid build up and has to have it drained. She was admitted into the hospital and is being treated for all the problems. She was told about a procedure to punt a shunt or something like that to bypass the liver but there was side effects. Could you please tell what these side effects are?

Hi,

The shunt is a palliative procedure used to bypass liver in conditions like cirrhosis. It is not a curative procedure and the diseases will remain there even after the procedure.

It has got side effects like bleeding and worsening of liver failure etc. You can consult a gastroenterologist for further assistance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
