What Are The Side Effects Of A Gastric Bypass Surgery?

I am considering gastric bypass surgery. Is nutrition absorption an issue? I am concerned about the side effects in the long term. My PCP thinks that the dietary risks are not worth the surgery; that most people don't consider the long term effects on the body. Do you have any insight that would help me make an informed decision?

Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I am Dr Rakesh Sharma answering your query.
I can understand your concern.
Side effects of gastric surgery results from the reduction of calorie and nutrient absorption. Because gastric bypass operations cause food to bypass the stomach and parts of the small intestine, where most of the iron and calcium from food is absorbed, women run the risk of anemia, developing osteoporosis, and other nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional supplements can counteract these deficiencies, but they must be taken life-long. The more extensive the operation, the greater the risk is for complications and nutrient deficiencies.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
