What Are The Side Effects Of A Cortisone Shot?

I had a cortisone shot on Monday (8/15) for my knee, for patellar tendinitis. Sunday (8/21) I started to bleed (like on my period) but I m not due to start for a couple of weeks. I am on the pill. I have read other stories of woman who have had the same issue. Will my cycle go back to normal soon? How long can this last and what other side effects are there from the cortisone shot? Info: 29 yr old female, 5 2, 155lbs.

Hi,

Cortisone belongs to the group of medications known as steroids or corticosteroids that is used in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions like arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, SLE, asthma, COPD, allergic reactions, blood disorders, certain cancers and many more. It may cause menstrual abnormalities such as irregular uterine bleeding, spotting or breakthrough bleeding between periods, vaginal bleeding, delayed cycles etc.

These side effects may persist from several days to several weeks and someone's menstrual cycle may go back to normal too. Other side effects of Cortisone are changes in appetite, acnes, facial hair growth, thinning of skin, easily bruising or bleeding, impaired wound healing, changes in body weight, mood swings, increase risk of infection, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, changes in sleep patterns, stomach irritation, nervousness, restlessness etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
