What are the side effects of a cortisone shot?

I had a cortisone shot on Monday (8/15) for my knee, for patellar tendinitis. Sunday (8/21) I started to bleed (like on my period) but I m not due to start for a couple of weeks. I am on the pill. I have read other stories of woman who have had the same issue. Will my cycle go back to normal soon? How long can this last and what other side effects are there from the cortisone shot? Info: 29 yr old female, 5 2, 155lbs.

Hi,

Cortisone belongs to the group of medications known as corticosteroids or steroids that is used in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions allergies, asthma, arthritis, skin problems like psoriasis or SLE, inflammatory bowel disease like crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, blood disorders, soft tissue problems, patellar tendon and many more. Steroid medications like Cortisone shot may affect menstrual cycles and make them irregular, heavier or prolonged after prolonged use of steroids. Usually, after stop taking Cortisone shot, it will return back to normal menstrual cycle over time. But, if it will stay for longer or bother you, then you should consult your doctor promptly for medical help. Other side effects of Cortisone shot are Itching, swelling, redness or irritation at the site of administration, nausea, vomiting, headache, sweating, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, fatigue, raised blood sugar level, raised blood pressure, trouble sleeping, weight gain, excitement, restlessness, confusion, facial hair growth, delayed wound healing, easily bruising or bleeding etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
