What Are The Side Effects Of Valparin?

Hi, My daughter,7 years old, sometimes like once or twice in 6 months gets fainted. Doctor suggested valprin and she is taking this medicine form 4 years. She is little better now and now gets fainted one a year or so. I was wondering if it s ok if doctor suggested her the same medicine for another 2 years. Would there be any serious side effects now or later on? And would you be fine in a year or two? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Valprain (valproic acid) has been prescribed to your daughter for seizure. She is fainting because of seizure. Its common side effects are headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, increased appetite, weight gain, somnolence, dizziness, fatigue, hypothermia, hyperammonaemic encephalopathy, liver toxicity, and hallucinations. As she has been taking it since a long time she has become accustomed to it. Serious common side effect is liver toxicity, which is observed more commonly in children less than 2 years old. Other serious toxicities are pancreatitis and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) which are very rare and are observed at high doses. These side effects can be prevented by laboratory monitoring.
Advice
1.     Continue Valparin as suggested by your doctor
2.     Take it after meal
3.     Consult your doctor to decrease dose or discontinue if she has excessive somnolence, decreased food or fluid intake and spontaneous bruising
4.     Investigation – get done following investigations after every 6 months of starting treatment with Valparin
1.     Serum bilirubin
2.     SGPT and SGOT
3.     Platelet count
4.     Bleeding time
5.     Coagulation profile
If you find any abnormal report then immediately contact your doctor. You can write at this portal also.
