What Are The Side Effects Of Timolol?

My nephew is 41 years old and recently has had glaucoma and tx with timolol and has had severe reaction of numbness, tingling of feet and armpits, sometimes forehead numb, trouble concentrating, lightheadedness, sometimes nausea and sweating especially when he eats, severe anxiety, forgetting what he is saying mid sentence. He has stopped timolol for 48 hours but still has symptoms. What could it be. Eye exam normal except for glaucoma. He has noted his L ear feels plugged intermittently. He also report severe thirst and very hungry.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Timolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist indicated for treating glaucoma.
Most commonly reported side effects were burning/stinging sensation, blurred vision and abnormal vision.
It can also cause hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, headache, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, dry mouth, depression and confusion.
Generally, it take some time for the side effects to subside completely even after the drug is stopped completely until its metabolites are detoxified and removed out of the body.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
