What Are The Side Effects Of Prednisone Tablet?

I am very nervous to go on humera to treat my UC with the reports I have read hear. I currently take 10mg a day of prednisone and feel great. My doctors want to get me off prednisone as I have been on it for a year but have very little to no side effects. Are the long term problems with prednisone worse than all the possible problems with humera?

Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the safety of Prednisone tablets.

The common side effects associated with the use of Prednisone.

Short-term effects (up to 3 weeks of therapy);
Weight gain and fluid accumulation (oedema), increased blood sugar,decreased potassium level, gastrointestinal upset and ulceration, reversible depression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and mood changes and abnormal behavior.

Long-term effects (more than 3 weeks of therapy);

Cushingoid appearance, abnormal facial hair growth, impotence, and menstrual irregularities, peptic ulcer disease, cataracts and increased intraocular pressure/glaucoma, myopathy, osteoporosis, and fracture spine.

Regarding Humira (Adalimumab).. it is not given on daily basis, found to be more effective in the maintenance therapy.

The commonly reported side effects include
Immediate (infusion related): chills, rigors, joint pain and fever
Late effects: risk of infection (re-activation of TB, pneumonia, etc)

Hope this answers your query.
