What Are The Side Effects Of Nitrofurantoin?

in the past I have been taking nitrofurantoin for recurring bladder infections. Now I have a torn ligament in my right ankle. If I recall correctly, this might be a side effect of the drug. Can you comment on this? my e-mail is YYYY@YYYY

Hi,

Nitrofurantoin may have side effects like pain in the hands and feet. However, it is unlikely that it can cause ligament tear in the ankle.

You could visit an orthopaedician for the supportive treatment for it if any immobilization is required for 2 weeks.

Also, you need to check your body Calcium levels as they may be low. If found below normal, taking vitamin D3 sachets containing 60,000IU once a week for two months can help you along with taking calcium-rich diet.

If you are by any chance overweight kindly get the weight reduced to normal as that could be another cause of having ligament tears on the feet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
