Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother needs to take reflux medications every day and takes Nexium and has for a few years now but it now gives her dreadful diarrhoea. Has tried other reflux tablets which don t help, give her bad stomach pains. Doctor has told her to keep on Nexium regardless of the diarrhoea. The Dr s do not seem to understand that it is dreadful diarrhoea and hits at anytime and she is losing weight because of it. They don t seem to get it. Is there anything else that could help. They have suggested to take Gastro Stop tablets which also give her pains in the stomach. Need help please.
Hello and thank you for your question. Here are a few things to try. I would have her take a probiotic twice daily for a few weeks and see if this helps. She can take imodium in the meantime to help with the diarrhea. She also needs to be tested for clostridium difficile an intestinal infection that can cause serious diarrhea. She may be able to use sucralfate instead of the Nexium and avoid these side effects. If she has not had a colonoscopy lately it may be time for her to get one by a gastroenterologist. I hope she gets some relief soon.
