What Are The Side Effects Of Metformin?

what are some of the side effects of metformin. My A1C used to be 7 and I was taking 4 a day. I have lost 64lbs, more than 20% of my body weight. I am still on one tablet a day. My A1C is between 5.8 and 6.3. I have been short of breath and at times hyperventalating. My thyroid is on the low normal side. Any connections.

Hi,
Metformin has improved your glycemic control. Initial A1C values of 7 has been reduced to 5.8-6.3. This is a good thing. Regarding weight loss, metformin can cause weight loss by improving insulin resistance. If your BMI is within the normal range of 18.5-25, then no need to worry and it is in fact a good thing again.
Now coming to your shortness of breath and hyperventilation; it is unlikely to be related to metformin. These symptoms must be evaluated further to know the cause.
If the thyroid values are in normal range with no clinical symptoms; then no need to worry.
I hope the above information has addressed your concerns. You can discuss the above information with your doctor. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Take care.
