What Are The Side Effects Of Depo Provera Injection?

Hi, I am 24 and around 200 pounds. I have a 9 month old through c-section, I just stopped bleeding about a month ago. I had my baby in December then got a depo shot in January. My doctor told me over the phone that I could still bleed on and off until the depo is completely out of my system. However, now when I wipe it is a bunch of brown specks. Not like any old blood I have ever seen from after a period. It is literally just brown specks on the toilet paper and in my urine. This has been going on for about 3 days now. I have some mild cramping. I also have HPV type 16 and 18 could it be from that? I am scheduling an appointment next week but I am terrified after doing a little research. I had intercourse the night before I noticed the specks..... what could this be????

Hi.

1. The brown specks can possibly be tiny blood clots.
2. The only way you can confirm whether these are blood clots or other types of casts eg muddy brown casts, is by urine examination which is what your doctor should do.
3. The urine analysis will also reveal any other sort of abnormalities in your urine that will help to reach a diagnosis.
4. HPV infection (of cervix) does not cause symptoms. These brown specks are not related to HPV infection.
5. HPV 16 and 18 can cause cervical cancer and it cause bloody vaginal discharge after intercourse but it does not cause the brown specks as you call them. Please note that cervical cancer also causes painful intercouse. I suspect no cancer although you will still need a pap smear to be on the safe side.
5. Depo provera can cause dark urine and cramps but the brown specks which are likely to be blood clots have not been reported as i checked the complete side effect profile of depo provera for you.
6. Again, urine examination will confirm the brown particles.
