What Are The Side Effects Of Alendronate?

Just diagnosed with osteoporosis of the spine. Given Alendronate. I have terrible stomach and gut issues. I come from a background of obesity and diabetes. I am not overweight and have no sugar issues, but this drug scares me. As a Veteran I have not been given any options but I need to know more. Suggestions please?

First I will list the common side effects of Alendronate .

Burning sensation in food Pipe , Ulcers in food Pipe, Perforation, Stricture of food pipe .

Stomach Pain , Stomach Ulcers , Acid regurgitation, Nausea, Indigestion.

Skin Rashes.

Low calcium levels , Muscolosketal Pain .

These side effects happen in some people and not in all. Also with continued usage of medicines these side effects may go off . So wait for a week and see if still it persists ask your doctor for an alternative.

In fact there is an Injection called Zolendronate which can be given once a year. Kindly ask your doctor for that.
