What Are The Scaly Rashes On Chest And Back After Exposed To Fumes?

Im a 32 year old female and used a strong household bathroom cleaner (Clorox Cleaner). While I was using it I didnt' have great ventilation and my eyes burned and I had to keep leaving the room. Just 48 hours later, I woke up with my entire chest back and stomach covered in a mildly itchy pink/reddish rash. The Rash has taken on a scaly/oldish look. With each by day 3 of the rash its a bit darker and has only spread a tiny bit to my legs. My Doctor gave me Hydroxyzine (antihistamine) to clear it up. However, it doesn't seem to be doing anything. What could this rash be and should I go back to my doctor? How long does this generally take to clear up?

Hello,

To reduce the rashes due to exposure to household cleaner, you should take a bath at the earliest to remove as much contact with the allergen as possible from your skin.

Pat yourself dry & apply cool compress. Apply Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream in the area affected.

Avoid scratching & stay away from contact with the allergen that caused you discomfort.

Orally you should take Fexofenadine (Allegra), one tab twice daily for 7 days. It should get better.

However, you should get clinically examined by a dermatologist, in case you need injections(shots) to get rid of the discomfort faster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
