Hello and thank you for asking HCM.
I have read the medical report of your father and i understand your concerns.
A Foley catheter, doesn't matter the reason why it was put in the bladder, will always cause some inflammation in the tissue around it,at least till the bladder get used to the presence of the catheter. After the inflammation is created, cells migrates to the point of contact. Usually these cells are white cells, but in the moment that vessels are damaged from the inflammation or the catheter itself, red blood cells will be present in the urine.
So the light reddish color that your father has,is just urine mixed with a small amount of blood. Nothing to worry here as long as this color is red like blood. The red specks probably are just
blood clots.
If he has an
enlarged prostate, the blood might came from it.
You should consult an
urologist,or send your father in the ER only if these happens:
-blood coming out from the catheter
-if the catheter isn't working properly, if there is no urine from the catheter in a lot of hours and your father has pain in his lower abdominal part.
-if your father has
fever (from an infection of the
urinary tract)
To prevent some of the complications here are some advices.
-he needs to drink a lot of liquids 2-3 liters per day. This way the risks to have a catheter blocked are minimal. Also it help against the infections
-fruit juice,cranberry juice,orange juice
-chamomile tea, rose tea 1 cup each day
-he needs to make sure to not fold the catheter. The urine needs to flow easily
-he needs to make sure to not pull the catheter because it will really harm him and can cause a lot of damage to his
urethra or his bladder.
If he has burning sensation in his urethra, its normal due to the presence of the catheter so you can give him
ibuprofen.
