What Are The Reasons For Headache And Intracranial Pressure From Coughing?

I had what I thought was the flu in November-December. Raging headache at that time, still have very bad daily headaches, much worse with intracranial pressure from coughing or sneezing. Had Norma MRI and cat scan. Worst headaches ever. I don't normally get headaches.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms. It is clear that your headaches are not due to flu, as several months have passed after that.

Regarding the raised intracranial pressure (ICP) being the cause of your headaches, as they increase after coughing and sneezing, it needs to be further pursued.

Other more specific features favouring raised ICP would be the presence of headache on waking up in morning, vomiting that relieves the headaches and blurring of vision at the peak of headaches.

We could also look for papilloedema in eye examination, which could favour raised ICP.

Normal MRI of brain, however, excludes most serious causes of raised ICP.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
