Hi! I am 40 years old and starting having irregular periods for about 2 years.I can go 2-3 months without having one then go three months with one, the last one was normal, then 2 weeks later it came back very light and now it has been 19 days of a very light period. Vaginal dryness for about 2 years and the start of warm flashes. Is this perimenopause?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

According to your symptoms the possibilities are :

-As you mentioned in perimenopausal period, some amount of hormonal imbalance can be seen leading to irregular periods.
-General conditions like anemia, thyroid disorders etc leading to irregular periods.
-Sometimes local causes like cervical erosion, polyp etc can lead to intermenstrual spotting. If want to be sure, better to consult your gynecologist once get examined and undergo investigations like ultrasound and serum FSH levels. Ultrasound helps in ruling out any local causes and finding out endometrial changes in perimenopausal period. FSH levels above 30mIU/ml indicate that you are nearing menopause.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
