Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
Contrary to what has been recommended in the past, exercise has shown to be safe and healthy in a normal
pregnancy. A good general rule to think about exercise is- if it doesn't hurt you, it will not hurt the baby.
As your belly gets larger, certain kinds of exercise (like running) can be uncomfortable, but low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, cycling (on a stationary bike indoors- you should not risk falling outside), or
yoga, can help keep you from gaining too much weight during the pregnancy, as well as help keep you physically strong for the delivery. Exercise also decreases the risk of
gestational diabetes.
So whatever exercise you choose, start out slowly and see how you feel. If you start to feel dizzy, short of breath, or contractions, stop and rest. Make sure to drink plenty of water as well, and take your
vitamins.
I hope I was able to answer your question and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy, Dr. Brown
