Hello, and I hope I can answer your questions.
Marijuana may be legal for adult use in some states by adults, and this is true in Oregon. It is illegal in many states
to test an adult without consent however many states have legal testing of newborns if the babies display symptoms of withdrawal, or if the mother is believed to have put the child at risk, and there is mandatory reporting of a positive
drug test in a newborn to child services. Using marijuana during
pregnancy has been studied since the 1960s and it seems to have little effect with mild use in early pregnancy but daily
smoking later in pregnancy has been associated with lower birth weights. There is no increased risk of birth defects from
THC. These early studies were questionnaire studies though, which can have flawed data.
Marijuana can be detected on a drug test even 45 days from last use. I suggest you discuss the reporting laws with your OB specifically for your state.
There may be medications to control your
anxiety that are safe during the pregnancy. I suggest you discuss this with your
psychiatrist as well as your OB.
I hope this information was helpful and best of luck with your pregnancy.
Take care, Dr. Brown
