The increased risk the doctor is referring to is attributed to a higher prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and the role of systemic inflammation(which occurs in the juvenile arthritis process) in the acceleration of atherosclerosis.

The long-term risk of cardiovascular disease for individuals with JRA remains uncertain but it is prudent to reduce the cholesterol asap. Given the potential for longer disease duration, it is possible that cardiovascular risk in this group surpasses that observed in adult-onset inflammatory arthritis. So,the risk for heart complications increases due to the presence of the juvenile arthritis and the inflammatory condition associated with elevated lipids worsens the juvenile arthritis progression. I hope this clears things up for you. Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
