What Are The Chances Of Regaining Normal Vision?

My friend underwent an uneventful cataract surgery and was doing fine till a few days later when she started feeling pain in the operated eye and it was watering. The following day she felt a gradual loss of vision and her surgeon immediately referred her to a retina specialist who operated on her to remove the pus that same day. However she has lost vision in that eye and can only see some light. The doctors don t promise her anything but say that sighting of light is a good sign. What are her chances of regaining normal vision and after how long? Thanks Doctor for your time.

Hello,

Sorry to know about your friend's eye problem. Endophthalmitis is one the dreaded complications following cataract surgery which can have varying results. Depending on the virulence of the organism ( bacterial or fungal), the outcome can be either good or bad. She seems to have undergone vitrectomy with intravitreal antibiotics by the retina specialist. She can wait for improvement to occur in the coming few days. Sometimes the associated inflammation is severe and can take weeks to subside. She seems to be receiving the right treatment and I gues she can wait for some more time to know the final visual outcome.Seeing light is definitely better than not perceiving light at all. Let us hope for the best.

Regards
