What Are The Chances Of Getting Lung Cancer From Smoking?

Hi, i used to only really smoke when i went out and was drinking, but now am finding that for about a year now i'm smoking every day and am buying a pack of 10/20 cigarettes a week. I do intend on stopping because i worry about getting cancer, do you think ill hav caused myself a lot of damage the way i've been smoking and will my lungs repair themselves. I'm just so worried i'm going to get lung cancer now.

Welcome to healthcaremagic,
Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals and more than 70 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer. People who smoke tobacco are 15 to 30 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers. Even smoking few cigarettes a day over a period of time can result in lung cancer.
As you have been a heavy smoker only for the past 1 year, your cancer of getting lung cancer are less currently, but if you do not stop smoking now the cancers gradually increase over time.
Remember smoking tobacco can cause many other cancers such as cancer of mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, stomach, bladder and bone marrow. So i recommend you to stop smoking and take help from your local Doctor if you find it difficult to stop as they can give you nicotine replacement therapy if required.
Hope that answers your question
Regards, Dr.Ismail
