What Are The Best Medicines For Alzheimer's?

Hi, in 2003 my Dad had 6 bypass Surgery, he went in normal and came out paranoid thinking the Doctors and everyone was out to get him, he was seeing white powder everywhere that was not there. Close to two weeks after the Surgery my Dad came back close to normal but a changed person. Now for the past 1.5 years I have been caregiver for my dad, now I just had to put him in the Hospital because of extreame aggitation, anger, confusion, delusion, halucination. The Doctors said because of Dads Surgery, he may have actually got ALZ / Dementia psycosis from Post Pump Psycosis. Is it common for Post Pump Psycosis to cause ALZ, is there a certain medicine that works best for this, curious on your thoughts and best meds to treat condition.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your dad's details including the past medical history and his current symptoms.

It is common for patients to develop dementia after coronary bypass surgery. Lack of blood flow to brain is supposed to be a risk factor for dementia.

An MRI brain should be done to confirm the diagnosis. Thyroid profile and vitamin B12 level should be checked to exclude other causes of his symptoms.

For Alzheimer's disease, good medications include donepezil, rivastigmine and memantine.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
