What Are The After Effects Of An Appendectomy?

I had lap appendectomy on April 15th. I have a hard time eating much as I get full quickly. Also, my lower belly feels heavy, and I have a pain in the lower right, where the appendix was removed, although there are no incisions on this side. Finally, I am short of breath with a dull pain midway between my upper chest. I had chest x-Rays done that didn t reveal anything. Perhaps it s indigestion. Is this common after appendectomy, even after two weeks? Any other ideas? Thanks very much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have read your description and understand your concern.
Appendix is a vestigial organ, and can be removed without any harm to the body, although it is involved in certain immune functions. Recovery with laproscopic operations are quite early as compared to open surgery.
Some of the symptoms what you are experiencing could be due to improper bowel movements and digestion process following surgery, as it might not have come back to normal yet. Do not worry much, as it should be back to normal in a week to den days time.
Until then, kindly be on semi-solid bland diet and consume good quantities of fluids. You can get an ultrasound abdomen scan done and consult Surgeon for opinion in case such symptoms continue to bother you.
Gradually, these symptoms should subside and you should be back to normal.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
