General & Family Physician, Dr. Sandhya's Response
Ormeloxifene or centchroman is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERMs) and is a non-hormonal non-steroidal contraceptive pill. It is used as a contraceptive pill and sometimes in dysfunctional uterine bleeding as well. Delayed periods are one of the common side effects of this medication. Period like cramps, milky white discharge may sometimes be noticed around the time of ovulation. Changes in the cycle by delaying the ovulation and slow development of the inner lining of the uterus and the mismatch that happens during this process in the menstrual cycle could be contributing to the cramps and discharge. If there are other signs like foul smelling discharge in increased amounts, itching, irritation, redness or soreness, it is advisable to rule out the chances of vaginal infections as this can result in cramps. Applying heating pads, taking a hot shower, staying well hydrated by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water, gentle massage of the lower abdomen and over the counter pain medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen could be soothing for temporary relief.
