Watery stools. Taking norflox tz. Recommendations?

Hello Doctor, My husband is having watery stools, since day before yesterday. We went to our family doctor and he started on Norflox Tz twice daily. So far 3 doses have been consumed. There is reduction in the frequency of stools, however, still the stools are watery.
Does this mean that Norfloxacin is not working on him?

Hi thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Stools test will reveal the type of infection (bacterial or protozoal) . The most common causes of diarrhea are bacterial and protozoal (amebiasis or giardiasis) infections. Norflox is effective in diarrhea due to bacterial infection and Tinidazole (TZ) is effective in protozoal infection. But if does not respond to both drugs, then it could be due to viral infection. Antibiotics can also cause watery diarrhea. Drugs like Loperamide are given to reduce the frequency of diarrhea due to viral infections.

Since he is prone for dehydration due to watery diarrhea you should give him oral rehydration fluids (ORT) like Electral. If the dehydration is severe then he will need IV fluids. Bland diet like bread, banana, yogurt and curd rice will help. Probiotics are effective in reducing the intensity and frequency of diarrhea.

However, if diarrhea persists then you should visit your treating Dr to rule out other causes like ulcerative colitis, celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

i hope this is helpful to you.

Hi,
Diarrhea caused by infections usually results from eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Signs and symptoms of infection usually begin 12 hrs to 4 days after exposure and resolve with in 3 days to 7 days .Norfloxacin is a right medicine.
Home care :
If you have mild to moderate diarrhea, you can usually be treated at home by drinking extra fluids. The fluids should contain water, salt and sugar.
Diluted fruit juices and flavored soft drink along with salted crackers and broths or soups also be acceptable.
Adults with diarrhea should be cautions to avoid spreading infection to family and friends.
Hand washing is an effective way to prevent the spread infection.
