Very High Heart Rate Upon Intense Exercise. Should I Be Concerned?

Hi, today in the gym I was having an intense cardio session, I exercise regularly and like to push myself when exercising. During the session I thought that I should check my heart rate , and although not feeling particularly tired, short of breath or dizzy, my heart rate was 220 bpm, dangerously high for y age. I was wondering why this may be if I did not feel any adverse effects to the exercise I was doing?
