Vein On Wrist Black And Blue. Blood Drawn, Very Painful, Hand Swollen. Effects Of Blood Drawn?

Th vein on the right side of my left wrist is a bit black and blue. I have.R.A. And my hand is a bit more swollen than usual. I noticed it because my wrist was a little red this morning. I had blood drawn on Thurs. from the inner elbow area on that arm on Thurs. and it was quite painful and I was wondering if something was not done correctly?

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
The pain after blood taken or infusion may be due to thrombophlebitis as in your case .
This is not due to any wrong procedure , rather unfortunate incident.
Apply ice pack and massage with heparin cream will provide you complete relief.
You can also take serratiopeptidase 20 mg three times in day for 5-7 days and that's all.
As far as concerned about wrist pain ( as an old case of rheumatoid arthritis) , consult your treating physician and get his opinion.
Good luck.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on your description, I suspect that your symptoms may be due to SUPERFICIAL THROMBOPHLEBITIS (inflammation in the vein) which presents with pain, swelling and redness.

Nothing to worry about this problem as this will resolve within a week or so

* An appropriate antibiotic for few days
* Analgesic & antiinflammatory medications like Motrin or Aleve
* Moist heat fomentation

If your symptoms still persist after the above measures, consult your treating physician.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
